Week Four Workouts

I decided that logging my workouts would be a good way of holding me accountable for ummm, well, for doing something. While I don’t have the patience or energy to log them everyday (though that’s not to say that I won’t talk about them throughout the week), I think a weekly post will suffice to track what I’ve done and the time I’ve committed to the cause. For the record, I think that’s what I’m going to start calling it: the cause. It sounds like a charity or something and, at this point, I think it kind of is. You know, giving back to the body that has given me so much. You know and all that yada yada yada.

Up next, REVIEWS for all these fabulous videos I keep talking about but not really saying much. Seriously, I’ve done many of these videos enough times that I could recite all the words (which is sad, you know, for a workout video). Nonetheless, I thought that it’d possible help some workout-video-shoppers out by giving a play-by-play of my thoughts and doing a little compare/contrast between them. Plus, it will make me feel infinitely cooler than posting the 5,348th review on Amazon for them that no one will ever see. This is cooler, right? Right.

What’d you do this week? Did you let the weather interfere with your workout plans (like I did)?

Psst – In case you were wondering, the “Week Four” in the title is referring to the fact it’s the fourth week of the year, you know, since I’m going to be awesome and do this every week (I swear I will, someone hold me accountable).

Winter Workout Blues

I must admit, I think one of the hardest parts of being healthy is the wintertime. Not only is there the candy, home-baked goods, and coma-enducing sugar sweets of the wonderful holidays from October through December, but, adding to that is the fact that – in 90% of the world at least – it’s freezing outside. With the cost of a gym membership through the roof, what is a frugal, workout-striving, picky girl to do? Well, workout at home I suppose. Now, before you bash yourself over the head at the idea of running in place for an hour, rest assured that there are so many other options out there.

And, while I don’t really remember much (other than sweating, a lot), I do remember that it was a good first experience with workout videos. Personally, I’m still a fan for the running-as-far-and-as-long-as-you-can-outside bit, but when you’re stuck indoors… well, you have to have something to turn to. And thus begins my latest fascination. My husband and I tried to follow the P90x craze for a while. And, while the results were pretty incredible, who has two hours every day to exercise? Just not practical for our lives.

So, here’s my current line-up:

What I love about this one is that the workouts are so customizable. It really isn’t much for the way of cardio (I did the cardio section one morning still in my pajamas, if that says anything). But, I do love that you can say I just want to work my arms today. And voila! You can just work your arms. Or arms and legs. Or legs and abs. Or whatever other combination you wish.

Hard. as. hell. Seriously. I’m not sure I need to say much else. I wish I had a full review here that I had done all three levels for 30 days, as the program suggests. But I haven’t. Unfortunately I get bored far too easily for that. But I will say this, I tried to skip ahead and start on Level 2 the first time I did it and ALMOST DIED. I was sore for three days. No joke. Jillian is hardcore.

Not as much of a rave review as how I feel about 30 Day Shred, but cardio max is good. And very difficult. I got it hoping there would be less strength and muscle building – as I wanted something that would be just good indoor cardio (read: not jogging in place for an hour). I was a little saddened to find that almost the entire first 20 minutes are lunges and squats. Okay for occasional use but I personally don’t want legs the size of tree trunks (even if they are muscular) so I’m restricting its use to once or twice a week. Again, that’s totally a personal thing.

I have also heard amazing things about the Brazilian Butt Lift (as being an overall good body shaper) but haven’t yet gotten the oomph the spurge the $70 on it. But, I might be right about there at this point. I’m afraid I need more to my line-up to make it through this long, cold winter.
